Aero socks are designed to fit extremely close to the skin. Because of this tight fit, they can sometimes be challenging to put on correctly.

Most aero socks feature a silicone grip band at the top cuff. This component is designed to keep the sock in place throughout the ride. The gripper section, however, is also one of the most delicate parts of the sock. During the fitting process, it can stick to itself, twist, or create small wrinkles and folds.

To put aero socks on correctly, first fold the gripper section outward. This prevents the silicone band from making contact with your skin while pulling the sock into position. Once the sock is fully on and properly tensioned around the foot and calf, unfold the cuff and reposition the gripper against the skin. Finally, smooth the fabric to eliminate any wrinkles or uneven tension.

A properly fitted aero sock should feel snug and secure, with a perfectly smooth surface from ankle to cuff and no visible folds or bunching.

One of the most common mistakes riders make is pulling the sock too high, directly over the widest part of the calf muscle.

The calf is constantly expanding and contracting while pedaling. If the cuff sits on the muscle itself, these repeated movements will gradually push the sock downward, causing it to slide and potentially create wrinkles.

For the best fit and the most consistent aerodynamic performance, position the cuff just below the widest part of the calf. This allows the gripper to anchor more effectively, keeping the sock stable throughout the ride and maintaining the intended aero profile from start to finish.

use a sports adhesive spray for maximum stability

If you want absolute confidence that your aero socks will stay perfectly in place throughout an entire race, there's a simple trick used by many competitive cyclists and time trial specialists.

After pulling the sock into position and before unfolding and repositioning the gripper section, keep the cuff slightly lower than its final position and apply a light layer of sports adhesive spray (often called tenso spray or physiotherapy adhesive spray) to the skin where the gripper will sit.

Once the spray becomes tacky, carefully pull the sock up to its final position and unfold the gripper against the skin as described above. The combination of the silicone gripper and the adhesive surface creates an exceptionally secure hold, significantly reducing the risk of movement during hard efforts, repeated accelerations, or long race days.

When applied correctly, the sock will remain stable and wrinkle-free from the start line to the finish, helping preserve both comfort and aerodynamic performance throughout the event.
